The active blogging we are invited to do during this internship has so far been useful.it helps us to document our process of reflections about our daily practices. i don’t take it just as note taking book but a tool to share my ideas. Even if i am used to blog, this exercise pushes me to keep the habit to blog.

it is a very useful tool to keep traces of ideas from one time, to give feedback on our assignments to our supervisors. Indeed i am improving my writing skills even if because of time , i used to store many drafts before publishing them. because i want just to put a relevant content which really reflects my views.

The conclusion that comes to me today after our interviews is that anyone, any country and any education institution can escape the internationalization of education which is a natural result of globalization.

The more visible elements of this trend of internationalization are educational partnerships where each institution has to take and give. Of course some resistances may arise due to personal interests, costs, cultural practices… but it is an experience worthwhile taking like being international student.

You learn new ways of learning, thinking, have contact with new cultures and grow stronger. So institutions have to get themselves so as to take more benefits from this.

Future belongs to transnational cooperations and the country or the education institution which would want to set itself apart would be isolated and increase its weaknesses.

Encounter with Pinnacle

We spent the whole day editing visual productions. With my internship mates we had to edit some of the video interviews we conducted for the outreach seminar. Most of the time , discussions arouse about whether to keep or not some parts of the interviews or at which place we must put them in the speech flow as our timeline is limited and the discourses must meet our topics: Internationalization of education and collaboration among educational institutions.

It was a great experience as some of us first got in touch with the video Editing software pinnacle and enjoyed it.
As for me , i was rather used to editing sound and it was good to learn and have refreshments of the basics of editing video production.

Even if the software was new to us ; we succeeded in managing it and found out of 3 min of relevant material.s
from a first package forty minutes of rushes. We were slow because we were testing out and learning at the same time.

I think the coming days we ‘ll be faster.

17/11/09
Learning from Interviews

One always learn from interviews.Today was devoted to interviews of teachers or reseachers of HIO ( Oslo University College) With my classmates , we are assigned to conduct these video interviews. it was up to us to choose the topic but it must fall within the field of Educational partnerships or cooperations at the time of internationalization of Education; A theme which indeed is of great interest to us.

we wanted to have opinions of staff menbers about this new challenge. We were not deceived or disappointed as those who did this favor to us were relevant resource persons.

Pointing out the possible drivers of and hindrances to internationalization of education, all of them come to the conclusion that among many positive aspects, internationalization of educationwill bring about more intercultural undertanding, interpersonal development, professional development of teachers and staff

Even if i am used to do interviews as former journalist-reporter for Radio, i greatly learnt from these sessions but still come to the same conclusion: Doing an interview to report facts is slightly different from interviewing for academic research.

When your topic is not clear enough , you are given some tips and hints to better assass your topic statement. But i was lucky as the persons i had in front of me really know about what they were talking about. as far internationalization of education is concerned.

Teaching in a digital world and the necessary need for digital competencies

This is what i am doing now during this internship. In the process of translating the course material in French, i had to use many digital and search tools to better render the meaning of sentence. To make it available online for others is also another thing for me to learn.

I am used to other blogs platform but my on-going experience is different.I used to post my thoughts and share it with a virtual community. But does learning in a digital world only mean using digital tools to learn? i have hardly come to the idea but i am still a little bit doubtful. Anyway i acknowledge the digital competencies building of these tools and the community created with those using the web with me.

Here i have to make link between many documents on the same platform and with other ones., sharing documents with my Master Mundusfor classmates. In using these tools, i got more used to some of google docs tools. Before that experience, i used Google Docs to just store documents.

In the process of translating the course material in French, i felt like a teacher preparing his. Indeed i am teacher. But it is different as i have to handle digital tools. Hence i came to the idea that before teaching in a digital world , you have to learn how to use these digital tools and appropriate them when you are not culturally accustomed to them.

I think that teachers can build in this digital environment new professional and interpersonal competencies with the digital community even if at first sight it looks virtual. Lets just find out what those new competencies might be mostly as far as when educational partnerships are concerned. In fact they are acquiring the new required skills of our more and more digital world.<ins datetime="2009-11-12T13:48:55+00:00"></ins><ins datetime="2009-11-12T13:48:55+00:00"></ins>

Translating Latina Lab course material into French …! An exhausting but rewarding work

It is not easy to think in another language with its cultural nuances and contextual therein especially when it is not your mother tongue, . On the second day of my internship in Latina Lab, I was assigned to translate into French the course introducing the concept of Latina Lab.

I first used Google translate to get a first translation draft. I was not out of the woods. Either i come accross an odd sentence or i get an hilarious expression. I had to bring myself to an incessant shuttle between French and English.

One difficulty: some concepts and expressions are designated differently in English and French. For example I translated the word “librarian educators” to “formateurs en Bibliothécomie” which may literally means ” trainers in Library Sciences” in French. I have not even suspected the existence of the word Bibliothécomie in French. In other words i learned new words and got some refreshments with others.

Other difficulty:To get closer to the English version, I used several translation tools such as Power Translator, Babylon and dictionary and online encyclopedia such as wikipedia to get an idea of the meaning and context of use of certain words. I came to the idea that automatic translation tools do not replace human intelligence that is able to specify the contexts across cultures.

My personal and professional experiences have been very useful for grasping the core meaning of certain expressions. Moreover the grammatical rules of the French language did not facilitate things.
In short I learned a lot and learned a lesson:No matter how powerful is a translation machine or software it cannot properly convey emotions and feelings embedded in sentences.

This leads me to question the emotional and affective dimensions of teaching and learning in a digital world. The emotional and affective relations which have always existed between teachers and learners and very often required in some cases are likely to disappear in our digital world today where we are bound to collaborate most of the time at distance.
May be i am wrong. Only the future holds the true answers.

13/10/2009 Encounter with the Latina Lab

In this constant changing world where everything is being digitalized , it is useful to think about how to teach and learn in a digital world. This introductory session to my internship in the Latina Lab located inside Oslo University College had been fruitful and resourceful. The Latina Lab concern is ” Teaching and Learning in a Digital world.” it is relevant to question the future of teachers, students, librarians. in an environment where everything is being digitalized.

Due to the internet, the “digital knowledge” is now available at any time everywhere. In spite of its virtual and abstract features, it is now part of our daily life .Then how to manage this knowledge as far as so that the resources, the content and their accuracy are concerned? What about the other parts of the world where electricity is not available to operate computers?

Some will say we can record the knowledge of those less gifted by nature parts of the world and make it available via internet to others. But what about the owners? Are they going to be just givers? if nothing is done to give them acces to other people values and knowledge, “living in a digital world “will always sound like “living in an unequal world.” True collaboration is then important.

All these questions came into my mind and induced me to search answers for my core concern during this internship: What does Teaching and Learning collaboratively in a digital world mean nowadays? what should be our new skills?
I hope the coming days will help to answer this question.
